1.  Does Perfect Paws Rescue require a signed adoption contract?

Yes. We feel very strongly about ascertaining - to the best of our ability - that each pet adopted from our rescue will be a perfect match with the adoptor - since our goal is to find permanent homes for each of our treasured pets. We believe that it is best for everyone involved when we make every effort to adopt out each rescued pet only once - to the correct home. And by asking our potential adoptors to treat our Adoption Application as a legal and binding agreement - and sign it as such - we then know that they are serious about adopting a pet, and not just wanting a temporary diversion. We rescue these pets so we can place them in a forever home where they are provided with everything that will add up to a good life for them. And we have found that if a potential adoptor is willing to invest the time to fill out our Adoption Application and sign it, then that person also has the pets' best interests in mind - and therefore would make a good candidate to adopt a pet.

2.  Why have you set up all of these complex Adoption Guidelines?

While our guidelines may seem a bit strict, we are very serious about finding permanent homes for each and every pet we rescue. We have found that when we are thorough, the pet has the best chances of finding their forever home. We do this because we love all of the pets we rescue - so we want them to be happy, loved and well-cared for in their new home ... but we also want the new family to be comfortable with, love and care for their new family member and all of their needs.

Therefore, we feel that all of these guidelines must be followed so our pets are a perfect match with their new parents and can become an integral part of a loving household.

And we believe that if your goals are the same as ours, you will fully understand the necessity for the process and be reassured that we are so thorough!

3.  Why do you charge an Adoption Fee for your rescued pets?

The rescue business is a very expensive one. We are an all volunteer, completely non-profit organization and have no corporate sponsorships. So Perfect Paws Rescue is run solely on monies obtained from our adoption fees, along with donations we receive from kind and generous people ... and our own pockets. Since none of us are independently wealthy millionaires, and we have no right or way to demand, take in or control the amount of donated money we receive, we rely heavily on those adoption fees to continue rescuing pets. So honestly, without the adoption fees, we would probably not be able to afford to continue to operate. We ourselves accept NO salaries or payment of any type for the incredible amount of time that we spend rescuing and caring for the pets, not to mention the amount of time that goes into reading thru all the applications to make sure that the proposed adopter qualifies as the type of person to responsibly adopt a pet, and then matching up the perfect home with the perfect pet - and we have many, many expenses to pay to keep us going.

Some of these costs - and this is not a complete list! - are: heat for the buildings to keep the pets warm; electricity for lights; water for drinking and cleaning; liability insurance; supplies for the pets including food, bowls, toys, chews and kitty litter; disinfectant, mops; towels and blankets; cages, crates, carriers and playpens ... and that's the short list! We give them the majority of their necessary vaccinations - including DHLPP and Intratrac (kennel cough) - which saves a lot on the vet's bill, BUT we still have to pay for the medication itself and the syringes to administer it. Then there is flea medication and heartworm preventative; vet charges for rabies vaccinations - which, by law, must be done by a licensed vet; as well as the surgery fees for spaying/neutering. Then there is gasoline to transport the pets and pull fees we must pay to the shelters to rescue them. There is also the expense of running our office and keeping it stocked with paper for printing out the adoption agreements, printer ink, business cards and all the other supplies needed in an office ...

And the list goes on. We take in owner surrenders and pull from many shelters in the Los Angeles area to save the pets on 'death row' that would be euthanized without our intervention. Most of the time these pets are not in good health - and we often end up paying expensive vet bills for exams, medications and sometimes surgery to get them back on a healthy path.

So the adoption fee covers the spay/neuter, age appropriate shots including DHLPP, Rabies and kennel cough, deworming, defleaing, flea & tick prevention, heartworm testing if appropriate, heartworm prevention medication and an exam by our vet. Now that you know how the money from adoption fees is being used, we believe that you can now understand why we must charge these fees! They are the lifeblood of our rescue group - and without this money we just literally could not afford to rescue all these wonderful pets and give them a chance to lead a great life with a loving family that they deserve. We appreciate your understanding and your support!!

4.  Do you charge Adoption Fees for all pets and what is the cost?

Yes, we must to keep our doors open! We base the fee on many different factors, and we can tell you that older pets - the ones we refer to as 'senior' pets but are often as young as only 5 years old - can be adopted for a much lower fee than the kittens, puppies and younger pets. So often families want to adopt a baby and the senior pets get left behind - so as an incentive to encourage families to adopt an older pet, we charge a much lower fee for them. Which is a really good deal considering that when you adopt an older pet they are used to people, well-mannered and eager to please - and you will know exactly what their personality will be like 'when they grow up' ... since they have already grown up!

5.  Is the cost of spay/neuter included in your Adoption Fees?

Yes, it is. And if the pet is too young, the adopter has two choices: 1) bring the pet back to Perfect Paws Rescue for the spay/neuter; 2) or have the procedure done by their own vet, send Perfect Paws Rescue a copy of the bill showing the procedure was done and Perfect Paws Rescue will send the adopter a check for $50.00 - which is the amount we normally pay for the procedure.

6.  At what age can you safely spay or neuter a kitten?

Both procedures can be performed as early as six weeks of age as long as the kitten is in good health. The American Humane Society is a strong proponent of early neutering since this guarantees that the animals will not be able to breed and populate within a community, which only increases the already overwhelming number of strays that lead sad, short, horrible lives that end in an early death. 7.  What if my pet is too young for spay/neuter before adoption?

You, as the adopter, will be required to sign a spay/neuter contract agreeing to have the pet spayed/neutered as soon as they are old enough - and you will be required to pay a deposit..

8.  I don't live here. If I adopt, will you ship a pet out of state?

No. Due to the excessive time, expense and stress on the pet, we very rarely make an exception on this.

9.  Do you require a pre-adoption home check for all of your pets?

Yes. As we have mentioned, we are very dedicated to finding a perfect match for each pet, so the adoption will be permanent. Also, we want to be reassured that the home we send one of our rescues to will be an appropriate environment for that particular pet where they will feel comfortable, loved and wanted - and be provided with a proper diet and care, and lots of love and affection.

10.  Was your rescue ever associated with another rescuer?

No. While we are happy to partner with other reputable rescues for certain projects or events, we work alone. Also, to clear up any confusion or misconceptions, please note specifically that we are in NO way affiliated with Dee Reynolds and Persians & Friends. Therefore we are NOT responsible for anything they do.

11.  What is the easiest way to adopt a pet from your rescue?

The easiest way to adopt a pet from Perfect Paws Rescue is to click to our Online Adoption Form, fill it out completely and submit it, then click to our Adoption Info section to get the dates and times of our Mobile Adoption Events and come out and meet our darling pets in person - or click to our Available Pets section and browse the pets we currently have up for adoption! Our ultimate and only goal is to rescue pets and help you find the one that is perfect for you and your home - and can become a part of your family.

12.  If I can't keep the pet I adopt, will you refund my adoption fee?

No, adoption fees are donations and therefore are never refunded. This is not like buying a car or a pair of shoes. We will gladly take back the pet and work to find another pet as a replacement but refunds cannot be given. Again, Perfect Paws is run solely on monies obtained from our adoption fees. (Unless we get one of the few and far between donations from some wonderful generous soul.) Each and every penny is used for the animals almost before it is ever received! We work on an extremely tight budget, so you can rest assured that your money is being put to great use!
